Disambiguation of Crisis Management

The term „crisis management“ is broader than „turnaround management“ in that it includes the early recognition of a crisis as well as crisis prevention. Therefore crisis management starts before turnaround management. It can be divided into active/anticipative crisis management and reactive/repulsive crisis management.35

Active (or anticipative) crisis management describes all activities undertaken in pursuit of crisis prevention and its early recognition. Reactive (or repulsive) crisis management describes the activities undertaken to handle a crisis once it has occurred.36 Crisis prevention is not part of this work, so it is mentioned here only to differentiate it from crisis management and to outline pre-emptive measures to avoid a crisis. The following pages focus on the reactive element of crisis management.
